What slipping feels like
The revs climb but the speed does not follow. The truck loses its grip on a grade, or it will not hold a gear under load. That gap between engine speed and road speed is the clearest sign the transmission or the clutch is slipping.
What harsh shifting feels like
A clunk or a jolt with each change, shifts that come too early or too late, or a transmission that hunts between gears. On an automatic or automated manual, that often points to the controls as much as the mechanical side.
Start with the fluid
The cheapest and most common cause is the fluid. Low, burnt, or the wrong transmission fluid makes a transmission slip and shift hard, so that is the first thing to check and the easiest to fix before it does real damage.
Clutch and mechanical wear
On a manual or automated manual, a worn clutch, tired linkage, or internal wear shows up as slipping and rough engagement. These do not get better, and a clutch caught early is a smaller job.
Electronic controls
