Uneven tire wear on a semi truck: causes and fixes
When one tire wears faster than its pair, or one edge goes bald while the rest looks fine, the tire is not the problem. It is the messenger. Uneven tire wear almost always comes from pressure, alignment, balance, or a worn part, and new rubber alone will not fix the cause.
Wrong tire pressure
Pressure is the first thing to check because it is the easiest to get wrong. A tire that runs low wears on both outer edges and runs hot. A tire with too much air wears down the center. Set your tires to the cold pressure your truck calls for, not the maximum stamped on the sidewall. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that correct pressure also protects your fuel economy, so this one habit saves tread and fuel at the same time.
Alignment that is off
If a steer tire wears on one edge, or you feel a feather pattern when you run your hand across the tread, alignment is the usual cause. Toe and camber that drift out of spec drag the tire instead of rolling it straight. Moving the tire will not help, because the next tire in that spot will wear the same way. Out-of-balance wheels

Worn steering and suspension parts
Tie rods, kingpins, wheel bearings, and tired shocks all let a tire move in ways it should not, and the tread pays for it with irregular wear. These do not fix themselves, and they tend to get worse. No. Rotation spreads the wear around, but if the cause is still there, the new tire in that spot wears the same way. Fix the cause first.
What does wear on only one edge mean?
One-edge wear on a steer tire usually points to alignment, most often toe or camber out of spec.
Does uneven wear fail a DOT inspection?
It can. Uneven wear can drop one spot on the tire below the legal tread depth. The federal floor is 4/32 of an inch on steer tires under 49 CFR 393.75, and 2/32 elsewhere.
